What’s happening at the Children's Eco Village?
Climate change is here, and its impacts are already being felt in many countries around the world. We recognise that in order to support communities to adapt to this changed climate, they need to be able to develop alternative ways of living and working. The Quran says that all Muslims should be khalifahs of the earth, its guardians. We have a moral duty to protect our only planet and to do our upmost to stop further impacts of climate change. Our long running Trees for Change campaign provides habitats for wildlife, improves groundwater storage and reducing risk of drought, and provides shade and shelter for locals.
What is the Children's Eco Village?
The Children’s Eco Village in Tanzania is a pioneering approach to Orphan Care, a gorgeous site where staff and children create the world they want to see through regenerative farming, environmental education, and waste management. In the next 2 years 4 homes will be retrofitted, providing accommodation for 36 more orphans, and a school will be built for 200 local children.
But governments have an enormous role to play too, which is why Islamic Help, through our accreditation with UN Faith for Earth Coalition, has attended COP summits, Oceans Conferences, and is lobbying for a strong and binding Plastics Treaty in negotiations this summer.
Our environmental work is growing. We are conducting environmental reviews of our programmes to improve their impact, and looking at more projects we can develop to support communities to adapt to and mitigate the challenges they are facing.
“The servants of the All-Merciful are those who walk gently on the Earth” (Quran 25:63)
