Flooding Devastation
As of 22nd August 2024, large parts of Bangladesh have been devastated by severe floods, triggered by torrential rains, that have affected 4.5 million people. At least a dozen deaths have been reported and nearly 190,000 people have sought refuge in emergency shelters. The eastern parts of the country have been particularly hit, with thousands of homes left underwater and residents taking to rooftops to escape the rising waters.
Vulnerable
Bangladesh is among several Asian countries that have become particularly vulnerable to the impact of climate change, with floods caused by heavy rains increasing in intensity and frequency every year. The latest disaster (August 2024) has hit hardest in the districts of Feni, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Cumilla and Chittagong, where five major rivers were flowing above danger levels.
